SUMMARY:Once Upon a Mattress
DESCRIPTION:Music by MARY RODGERS; Lyrics by MARSHALL BARER; Book by JAY THOMPSON\, DEAN FULLER\, and MARSHALL BARER\nPresented by the Hayes School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance \nDirected and Choreographed by Kevin Warner; Music Direction by Joby Bell and Tyler Young; Appalachian Symphony Orchestra Directed by Alexandra Dee \nMany moons ago in a far-off place\, Queen Aggravain decreed that no couples could marry until her son\, Prince Dauntless\, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince\, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is\, until the “shy” swamp princess\, Winnifred the Woebegone\, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test\, marry her prince\, and help Lady Larken and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs\, by turns hilarious and raucous\, romantic and melodic\, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. For after all\, a princess is a delicate thing.  \nONCE UPON A MATTRESS is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com \nTicketsStudents $10\, Faculty/Staff $15\, Adults $17 \n\nBuy Tickets Here \nLearn more about the performance and purchase tickets at the Department of Theatre and Dance website.

SUMMARY:Appalachian State presents "Once Upon a Mattress\," Act I - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance collaborate on a production of Act I of this beloved musical comedy. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Princess and the Pea\, Once Upon a Mattress tells the story of Princess Winnifred\, who must prove her sensitivity by sleeping atop 20 mattresses with a pea hidden underneath. The Broadway production (music by Mary Rodgers\, lyrics by Marshall Barer\, and book by Jay Thompson\, Dean Fuller\, and Barer) is a fan favorite thanks to its catchy tunes\, comedic elements\, and wholesome nature.  \nLearn more about the Hayes School of Music at music.appstate.edu/ \nLearn more about the Department of Theatre and Dance at theatreanddance.appstate.edu/ \n \n \n \n \n \n Run Time: Approx. 60 minutesRecommended for: Grades K-6Study Guide: download pdf here \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets\nContact theschaefercenter@appstate.edu\, call 828-262-4046\, visit the box office at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts\, or register online. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Groups of 25+ people$1/person \nGroups of less than 25 people$5/person \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register group of 25+ people\n \n Register group of less than 25 people\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Synopsis of Once Upon a Mattress\n \n \n \n \n \n Queen Aggravain\, the queen of a kingdom\, is determined to keep her son\, Prince Dauntless\, single by refusing to allow anyone else to marry until he finds a bride. To test potential princesses\, the Queen subjects them to the “sensitivity test\,” involving sleeping on a bed with a pea hidden beneath 20 mattresses. This test is designed to be impossibly hard for any true princess to pass. Sir Harry and Lady Larken\, who are secretly going to have a baby\, are desperate for the ban to be lifted so they can marry. Sir Harry seeks out Princess Winnifred\, believing she could be the answer. Winnifred\, a feisty and unconventional princess\, arrives at the castle and challenges the Queen’s rigid rules and expectations. She doesn’t fit the mold of a “proper” princess and is seen as a breath of fresh air. The people of the kingdom begin to defy the Queen’s rules\, and Winnifred’s influence leads to a change in the kingdom’s atmosphere. She uses her wits and strength to charm the Prince and challenge the Queen. Ultimately\, Winnifred’s actions and the Prince’s own defiance of his mother’s control break a curse on the King\, who is finally able to speak again. This leads to the Queen’s reign being overthrown\, and the kingdom rejoices in its new freedom. Prince Dauntless and Princess Winnifred marry\, and Sir Harry and Lady Larken are finally able to wed\, marking a new era of happiness and freedom for the kingdom.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Educator Workshops\nThe APPlause! SUMMARY:oh to be pure again
DESCRIPTION:by Kira Rockwell\n\nDuring one hot Texas summer at a Charismatic Christian camp\, an idealistic counselor works to shepherd the senior girls’ cabin along their journey to make an authentic connection with something bigger than themselves\, only to be confronted with disillusionment of her own faith. A visceral ode to female desire\, submission\, rebellion\, and growing up in a religious culture that’s obsessed with purity.
