He also studied the Nyamakala tradition of circus\, practiced by the Fula people of West Africa. He eventually joined Guinea’s original circus company\, Circus Baobob\, with whom he toured Africa and Europe. \nIn the early 2000s\, Yamoussa was recruited to come to Canada with Cirque Eloize\, a Montreal-based Canadian cirque company.  While in Canada\, he also performed with Cirque du Soleil and Cavalia (cirque with horses). In 2007\, Yamoussa realized his dream and opened his own company\, Kalabanté Productions\, in Montreal Canada. He recruited many of his extended family members to join the company\, including his twin sisters\, brothers\, and cousins. \nThe company began doing shows in Quebec\, and over the years expanded to all of Canada\, the USA and now performs all over the world. In 2018\, Kalabanté opened their own studio and school in Montreal\, where they offer classes in African dance\, cirque\, and drumming. \nKalabanté Productions is proud to be able to share their work\, achievements and skills to inspire others and to assist with the humanitarian mission to help the Guinean community from which Yamoussa and many of his company members come. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. SUMMARY:Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group (aka Small Large Band)
DESCRIPTION:Lyle Lovett & His Acoustic Group (aka Small Large Band) take the Schaefer Center stage with an all-star lineup — Russ Kunkel (drums)\, Leland Sklar (bass)\, Jim Cox (piano)\, Jeff White & James Harrah (guitars)\, and Amy Keys (vocals) — delivering a powerful\, more amplified version of their signature acoustic sound. \nA singer\, composer and actor\, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling\, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country\, swing\, jazz\, folk\, gospel\, and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. \nWhether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or his ‘Large Band\,’ Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents\, but also the diversity of his influences\, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. \nSince his self-titled debut in 1986\, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades\, besides the four Grammy Awards\, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award\, and was named Texas State Musician. \nHis works\, rich and eclectic\, are some of the most beloved of any artist working today. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets\nContact theschaefercenter@appstate.edu\, call 800-841-2787 or 828-262-4046\, visit the box office at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts\, or purchase online. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n $70 Tier 1$60 Tier 2$45 Tier 3$25 App State students \nApp State faculty/staff: 10% off all tiers Call the Box Office for special code \nNC sales tax is included in ticket price. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n BUY TICKETS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. Originally from Charlotte\, NC\, Epley first explored his passion for science in a lab he built in his parents’ basement. He just had to clean the basement first. (Clever parents!) This love of hands-on learning grew\, and he eventually went on to study chemistry and physics in a specialized high school\, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. The first of its kind in the nation\, NCSSM is a residential school with such luxuries at the time as PhD professors\, its own electron microscope\, and a Minivac mainframe with campus-wide internet\, before the internet. From there\, Epley continued his studies at the university level\, exploring a degree in Chemical Engineering. \nAlong the way\, however\, he found a second passion — performing — and by joining the two\, David has created the most fulfilling work of his life. Over the last 16 years as Doktor Kaboom\, he has performed more than 2\,000 live shows to a cumulative audience of over 2\,000\,000 students and families worldwide. \nDavid believes in service\, is a veteran of the US Army\, and for five years served his community as a firefighter and EMT. Home is now Seattle\, Washington\, with his magnificent wife\, Annie. Occasionally they even hear from their two amazing daughters. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Educator Workshops\nThe APPlause! SUMMARY:PVRIS
DESCRIPTION:PVRIS (pronounced “Paris”) burst onto the scene blending haunting atmospheres with razor-sharp hooks\, led by the powerhouse that is Lynn Gunn. Hailing from Massachusetts\, they quickly made waves with their genre-blurring sound — melding rock\, synthpop\, and dark electronica into anthems built for both the club and the mosh pit. Debut album White Noise became a cult classic\, with emotionally charged tracks and cinematic vibes. Since then\, they’ve evolved with each release\, never afraid to push boundaries or get brutally honest. A decade later\, PVRIS are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of White Noise by taking it back to the stage\, revisiting the record that started it all while continuing to carve out the future. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets\nContact theschaefercenter@appstate.edu\, call 800-841-2787 or 828-262-4046\, visit the box office at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts\, or purchase online. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n $15 general public$10 students \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Buy Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. SUMMARY:Keynote Address: An Evening with Author Dave Isay
DESCRIPTION:The Common Reading Program at Appalachian State University is delighted to offer Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work\, from legendary American radio producer and documentarian Dave Isay\, as the university’s common reading book for the 2025-2026 academic year. In 1994 Isay founded Sound Portraits Productions\, from which in 2003 he launched StoryCorps\, an oral history project aimed at recording\, preserving\, and sharing the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs. StoryCorps\, whose mission is to “help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all—one story at a time\,” is committed to the idea that everyone has an important story to tell\, and everyone’s story matters. In Isay’s own words\, StoryCorps is “a project about permanence in an ever more disposable society. It reminds us of what’s really important in the midst of all of life’s distractions. It encourages us to connect despite endless temptations to detach and disengage.” \nCallings is Isay’s eighth book\, and his fifth for StoryCorps\, for whom his contributions include beloved bestsellers Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project\, and All There Is: Love Stories from StoryCorps. In Callings\, an inspiring tribute to rewarding work and the American pursuit of happiness\, Isay presents unforgettable stories from people doing what they love\, demonstrating how work can be about much more than just making a living\, and that chasing dreams and finding inspiration in unexpected places can transform a vocation into a calling. \nLearn more about the Common Reading Program here. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event is free and open to the public.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Author\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Dave Isay’s work over the past three decades has earned him nearly every award in broadcasting\, including five Peabody Awards\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a MacArthur “Genius Grant\,” the 2015 TED Prize\, and numerous other recognitions. His work\, which taps into the heart and soul of the human experience\, has brought more than 600\,000 Americans together—two at a time—to record intimate conversations about their lives\, create a human connection\, pass wisdom from one generation to the next\, and leave a legacy for the future. Each conversation is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress—the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered. Millions of listeners hear StoryCorps’ weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition\, and select stories are also shared through StoryCorps’ podcast\, animated shorts\, digital platforms\, and books. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events.
