SUMMARY:Ailey II: The Next Generation of Dance
DESCRIPTION:For over 50 years\, Ailey II – The Next Generation of Dance – has merged the spirit and energy of the country’s finest early-career dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding and emerging choreographers. Founded by Alvin Ailey in 1974\, this universally renowned company embodies his pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances\, training\, and community programs for all people. Under the leadership of Sylvia Waters\, who served as artistic director for 38 seasons\, Ailey II flourished into one of the most popular modern dance companies\, combining a rigorous touring schedule with extensive community outreach programs. Today\, with Artistic Director Francesca Harper at the helm\, she brings fresh perspectives to Mr. Ailey’s legacy\, while nurturing new creative voices and propelling the company forward. \nPROGRAM \n  \nStreamsChoreographer Alvin Ailey’s abstract exploration of bodies in space\, danced to a percussion score by Miloslav Kabelac. This highly structured yet fluid compilation of solos\, duets\, and group choreography reflects the formal\, meditative mood of Kabelac’s music. While there is no narrative\, the movement and music arouse distinct thoughts and feelings\, evoking images and sensations inspired by bodies of water — from a gentle brook to a turbulent ocean — that correlate to the changing tides within us. \nDown the Rabbit HoleInspired by The Matrix film series\, “Down the Rabbit Hole” explores how technology weaves into the fabric of daily life\, transforming how we as humans interact and function. Set to a score by Johannes Goldbach and Pomassl\, Thomas begs the question\, in this high-powered piece: Technological change — are we powering it or is it powering us? \nRevelationsPerformed to African American spirituals\, song-sermons\, gospel songs\, and holy blues\, Alvin Ailey’s Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. More than just a popular dance work\, it has become a cultural treasure\, beloved by generations of fans. Seeing Revelations for the first time or the hundredth can be a transcendent experience\, with audiences cheering\, singing along\, and dancing in their seats from the opening notes of the plaintive “I Been ’Buked” to the rousing “Wade in the Water” and the triumphant finale\, “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.” \n \n \n \n \n \n “Revelations” Repertoire Class for All Levelsdesigned for ages 10+\nThursday\, February 195-6:15pmVarsity Gym Dance Studios 208 A & B\, App State\, 530 Rivers Street\, Boone\n\nFREE and open to the public\n\nRegistration appreciated. Released in the throes of bro-country and before pop stars were crossing over into the genre left and right\, it showcased an artist completely unafraid to double down not only on herself\, but what she’d always loved: classic country songs written from the intellect and the gut\, hell-bent on truth-telling and both timeless and urgent all at once. Respected by her peers\, praised by critics and beloved by her fans\, Price created a lane where independent-minded\, insurgent country music can exist and thrive alongside the mainstream\, and became an ardent fighter for her beliefs in a genre where the norm is to shut up and sing. A trailblazer and a champion for the craft\, Price redefined what it meant to be a modern country artist. \nAnd now she’s back with an exquisite\, truly timeless album that reconnects with her roots and pays tribute to the art of the country song\, inspired in part by the legends whom she now calls colleagues and friends. Hard Headed Woman is both a look forward and a look back: a way to march forward while staying true to yourself when the path of less resistance is right there in front of us\, and short cuts are around every corner. And a way to look back when we need to trim what is no longer working\, and to stay connected with where we’re from. It is a promise and a manifesto\, a love song to both a city and a genre\, and a defiant cry for individuality. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. Guided by his passion for percussion as well as for dance and theatre\, Kattam is constantly setting a course for new horizons that bring out the depth of the human experience. \nAmong the music groups with whom he works\, Kattam strives to strike a balance between technical and intuitive styles\, inspired by the masters under whom he has trained. While staying true to the respective traditions of the instruments he plays\, he also blends styles and genres\, in keeping with the 21st century trend toward genre-bending. \nIn his youth projects\, Kattam acts as both a transmitter and a communicator. His original pieces place children front and center. Watch\, listen\, and\, above all\, participate! His aim is to foster a taste for music\, discovery and self-expression among these children\, to partake in celebrations specific to different cultures\, and to make both popular and spiritual music accessible — ultimately in order to teach children that beyond cultural differences lies a shared humanity. \nFor Kattam\, the stage\, first and foremost\, is a way to share this enthusiasm and the life force that drives him. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Educator Workshops\nThe APPlause! He also studied the Nyamakala tradition of circus\, practiced by the Fula people of West Africa. He eventually joined Guinea’s original circus company\, Circus Baobob\, with whom he toured Africa and Europe. \nIn the early 2000s\, Yamoussa was recruited to come to Canada with Cirque Eloize\, a Montreal-based Canadian cirque company.  While in Canada\, he also performed with Cirque du Soleil and Cavalia (cirque with horses). In 2007\, Yamoussa realized his dream and opened his own company\, Kalabanté Productions\, in Montreal Canada. He recruited many of his extended family members to join the company\, including his twin sisters\, brothers\, and cousins. \nThe company began doing shows in Quebec\, and over the years expanded to all of Canada\, the USA and now performs all over the world. In 2018\, Kalabanté opened their own studio and school in Montreal\, where they offer classes in African dance\, cirque\, and drumming. \nKalabanté Productions is proud to be able to share their work\, achievements and skills to inspire others and to assist with the humanitarian mission to help the Guinean community from which Yamoussa and many of his company members come. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. SUMMARY:Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group (aka Small Large Band)
DESCRIPTION:Lyle Lovett & His Acoustic Group (aka Small Large Band) take the Schaefer Center stage with an all-star lineup — Russ Kunkel (drums)\, Leland Sklar (bass)\, Jim Cox (piano)\, Jeff White & James Harrah (guitars)\, and Amy Keys (vocals) — delivering a powerful\, more amplified version of their signature acoustic sound. \nA singer\, composer and actor\, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling\, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country\, swing\, jazz\, folk\, gospel\, and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. \nWhether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or his ‘Large Band\,’ Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents\, but also the diversity of his influences\, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. \nSince his self-titled debut in 1986\, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades\, besides the four Grammy Awards\, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award\, and was named Texas State Musician. \nHis works\, rich and eclectic\, are some of the most beloved of any artist working today. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets\nContact theschaefercenter@appstate.edu\, call 800-841-2787 or 828-262-4046\, visit the box office at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts\, or purchase online. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n $70 Tier 1$60 Tier 2$45 Tier 3$25 App State students \nApp State faculty/staff: 10% off all tiers Call the Box Office for special code \nNC sales tax is included in ticket price. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n BUY TICKETS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. Originally from Charlotte\, NC\, Epley first explored his passion for science in a lab he built in his parents’ basement. He just had to clean the basement first. (Clever parents!) This love of hands-on learning grew\, and he eventually went on to study chemistry and physics in a specialized high school\, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. The first of its kind in the nation\, NCSSM is a residential school with such luxuries at the time as PhD professors\, its own electron microscope\, and a Minivac mainframe with campus-wide internet\, before the internet. From there\, Epley continued his studies at the university level\, exploring a degree in Chemical Engineering. \nAlong the way\, however\, he found a second passion — performing — and by joining the two\, David has created the most fulfilling work of his life. Over the last 16 years as Doktor Kaboom\, he has performed more than 2\,000 live shows to a cumulative audience of over 2\,000\,000 students and families worldwide. \nDavid believes in service\, is a veteran of the US Army\, and for five years served his community as a firefighter and EMT. Home is now Seattle\, Washington\, with his magnificent wife\, Annie. Occasionally they even hear from their two amazing daughters. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Educator Workshops\nThe APPlause! SUMMARY:PVRIS
DESCRIPTION:PVRIS (pronounced “Paris”) burst onto the scene blending haunting atmospheres with razor-sharp hooks\, led by the powerhouse that is Lynn Gunn. Hailing from Massachusetts\, they quickly made waves with their genre-blurring sound — melding rock\, synthpop\, and dark electronica into anthems built for both the club and the mosh pit. Debut album White Noise became a cult classic\, with emotionally charged tracks and cinematic vibes. Since then\, they’ve evolved with each release\, never afraid to push boundaries or get brutally honest. A decade later\, PVRIS are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of White Noise by taking it back to the stage\, revisiting the record that started it all while continuing to carve out the future. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets\nContact theschaefercenter@appstate.edu\, call 800-841-2787 or 828-262-4046\, visit the box office at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts\, or purchase online. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n $15 general public$10 students \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Buy Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. SUMMARY:Keynote Address: An Evening with Author Dave Isay
DESCRIPTION:The Common Reading Program at Appalachian State University is delighted to offer Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work\, from legendary American radio producer and documentarian Dave Isay\, as the university’s common reading book for the 2025-2026 academic year. In 1994 Isay founded Sound Portraits Productions\, from which in 2003 he launched StoryCorps\, an oral history project aimed at recording\, preserving\, and sharing the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs. StoryCorps\, whose mission is to “help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all—one story at a time\,” is committed to the idea that everyone has an important story to tell\, and everyone’s story matters. In Isay’s own words\, StoryCorps is “a project about permanence in an ever more disposable society. It reminds us of what’s really important in the midst of all of life’s distractions. It encourages us to connect despite endless temptations to detach and disengage.” \nCallings is Isay’s eighth book\, and his fifth for StoryCorps\, for whom his contributions include beloved bestsellers Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project\, and All There Is: Love Stories from StoryCorps. In Callings\, an inspiring tribute to rewarding work and the American pursuit of happiness\, Isay presents unforgettable stories from people doing what they love\, demonstrating how work can be about much more than just making a living\, and that chasing dreams and finding inspiration in unexpected places can transform a vocation into a calling. \nLearn more about the Common Reading Program here. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event is free and open to the public.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Author\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Dave Isay’s work over the past three decades has earned him nearly every award in broadcasting\, including five Peabody Awards\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a MacArthur “Genius Grant\,” the 2015 TED Prize\, and numerous other recognitions. His work\, which taps into the heart and soul of the human experience\, has brought more than 600\,000 Americans together—two at a time—to record intimate conversations about their lives\, create a human connection\, pass wisdom from one generation to the next\, and leave a legacy for the future. Each conversation is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress—the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered. Millions of listeners hear StoryCorps’ weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition\, and select stories are also shared through StoryCorps’ podcast\, animated shorts\, digital platforms\, and books. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events.
