SUMMARY:Appalachian Energy Summit Keynote Address by Michael Regan
DESCRIPTION:Michael Regan will deliver a keynote address\, followed by a moderated fireside chat. \nThe keynote address is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. \nThe Appalachian Energy Summit is designed primarily for faculty\, staff\, and students at institutions of higher learning\, as well as local and state government staff and employees of non-profit organizations focused on energy and sustainability. The Energy Summit started in 2012 and has a history of bringing together world leaders in the energy and sustainability sectors. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAbout Michael S. Regan\nMichael S. Regan was nominated by the 46th President of the United States\, confirmed by the United States Senate on March 10\, 2021\, and sworn in as the 16th Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency on March 11\, 2021. \nThe son of public servants – his mother\, a nurse for nearly 30 years\, and his father\, a retired Colonel with the North Carolina National Guard\, Vietnam veteran\, and former agricultural extension agent – Regan went on to follow in his parents’ footsteps to pursue a career in public service. \nRegan has been recognized by leading domestic and global organizations / governments for his outstanding contributions to environmental protection\, while spurring economic growth across numerous industry sectors. His commitment to excellence has been acknowledged through several awards including Time Magazine TIME100 Next\, Time Magazine TIME100 Health\, the HBCU Honors Distinguished Public Service Award\, Boys and Girls Club of America Alumni Hall of Fame\, Keystone Policy Center Leadership Award\, and the NNPA National Legacy Award. \nRegan has traveled across the country and around the world meeting face-to-face with communities hardest hit by environmental pollution and threats to public health. In his first year as Administrator\, Regan established EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights\, the first national program office in the agency’s history dedicated to solving environmental challenges in economically distressed and frontline communities. \nAs EPA Administrator\, Regan was the Chief Executive Officer of a federal regulatory agency with more than 16 thousand employees and an annual operating budget north of 10 billion dollars. With an additional historic funding boost from the United States Congress beyond the annual budget\, Regan designed and led an investment strategy of more than 100 billion dollars in the health\, equity\, and resilience of American communities\, while providing the private sector with regulatory certainty to ensure job growth\, global economic competitiveness\, and investor confidence. \nPrior to his nomination as EPA Administrator\, Regan served as the 17th Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). \nAs Secretary\, he spearheaded the development and implementation of North Carolina’s seminal plan to address climate change and transition the state to a clean energy economy. Under Regan’s leadership\, he secured the largest coal ash clean-up-legal settlement in United States history. He led complex negotiations regarding the clean-up of the Cape Fear River\, a body of water contaminated for decades by the toxic chemicals per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In addition\, Regan established North Carolina’s first-of-its-kind Environmental Justice and Equity Advisory Board to better align social inequities\, environmental protection\, and community empowerment. \nPrior to NCDEQ\, Regan served as the Associate Vice President of U.S. Climate and Energy and Southeast Regional Director at the Environmental Defense Fund. He successfully managed complex negotiations with energy companies\, corporate business leaders\, environmental and industry associations and elected officials across the nation. \nRegan is a graduate of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University\, making him the first EPA Administrator to have graduated from a Historically Black University. He earned a master’s degree in public administration from The George Washington University and received an honorary doctorate from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in 2021. \nHe and his wife Melvina are proud parents of their son Matthew and dog Zeus.

SUMMARY:Keynote Address: An Evening with Author Dave Isay
DESCRIPTION:The Common Reading Program at Appalachian State University is delighted to offer Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work\, from legendary American radio producer and documentarian Dave Isay\, as the university’s common reading book for the 2025-2026 academic year. In 1994 Isay founded Sound Portraits Productions\, from which in 2003 he launched StoryCorps\, an oral history project aimed at recording\, preserving\, and sharing the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs. StoryCorps\, whose mission is to “help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all—one story at a time\,” is committed to the idea that everyone has an important story to tell\, and everyone’s story matters. In Isay’s own words\, StoryCorps is “a project about permanence in an ever more disposable society. It reminds us of what’s really important in the midst of all of life’s distractions. It encourages us to connect despite endless temptations to detach and disengage.” \nCallings is Isay’s eighth book\, and his fifth for StoryCorps\, for whom his contributions include beloved bestsellers Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project\, and All There Is: Love Stories from StoryCorps. In Callings\, an inspiring tribute to rewarding work and the American pursuit of happiness\, Isay presents unforgettable stories from people doing what they love\, demonstrating how work can be about much more than just making a living\, and that chasing dreams and finding inspiration in unexpected places can transform a vocation into a calling. \nLearn more about the Common Reading Program here. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event is free and open to the public.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Author\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Dave Isay’s work over the past three decades has earned him nearly every award in broadcasting\, including five Peabody Awards\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a MacArthur “Genius Grant\,” the 2015 TED Prize\, and numerous other recognitions. His work\, which taps into the heart and soul of the human experience\, has brought more than 600\,000 Americans together—two at a time—to record intimate conversations about their lives\, create a human connection\, pass wisdom from one generation to the next\, and leave a legacy for the future. Each conversation is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress—the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered. Millions of listeners hear StoryCorps’ weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition\, and select stories are also shared through StoryCorps’ podcast\, animated shorts\, digital platforms\, and books. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events.
