Over the course of Mountain Stage’s 43-year run on public radio\, the show has become a second home for Mattea\, who’s appeared as a guest on the Charleston\, WV-based program more times than any other female artist. In 2019\, Mattea began guest-hosting episodes of Mountain Stage\, filling in for longtime host Larry Groce. In 2021\, Mattea took over as full-time host of Mountain Stage. She aims to bring humor\, heart\, and a whole lot of unforgettable performances to the airwaves\, showcasing both rising young talent and legendary veterans while at the same time sharing a taste of the West Virginia she grew up with.\n \nBorn and raised in Kanawha County\, Mattea lived in West Virginia until the late 1970s\, when she moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams of a career in music. She signed her first record deal in 1983 and charted with a pair of early releases\, but it was her acclaimed third album\, Walk the Way the Wind Blows\, that truly signaled her arrival as a star. The record produced four Top 10 singles at country radio and set the stage for Mattea’s 1987 smash\, Untasted Honey\, which marked the first of five of her albums to be certified gold. Untasted Honey contained back-to-back #1 country singles\, as did 1989’s Willow in the Wind\, which helped Mattea take home two consecutive CMA Female Vocalist of the Year awards along with a Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Performance. Over the next three decades\, Mattea would go on to record nearly a dozen more albums exploring country\, folk\, Celtic\, and gospel music\, notch her first platinum record\, earn her second Grammy\, top the Bluegrass Albums chart\, and garner yet another Grammy nomination for her album Coal.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Sarah Jarosz\n\nThe seventh full-length from four-time Grammy Award winner Sarah Jarosz\, Polaroid Lovers is an album-long meditation on those strangely ephemeral moments that indelibly shape our lives. “What I love about a Polaroid is that it’s capturing something so fleeting\, but at the same time it makes that moment last forever\,” says the Texas-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. “It made sense as a title for a record where all the songs are snapshots of different love stories\, and there’s a feeling of time being expansive despite that impermanence.” Thanks to the rarefied alchemy that infuses all of Jarosz’s output — her finely wrought lyricism\, ravishing vocal work\, virtuosic yet unfettered musicality — Polaroid Lovers performs the much-needed magic of leading us toward a heightened sense of presence\, all while casting a lovely spell with her timelessly powerful songs. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. Please allow extra time to park and arrive at the theatre before showtime. See map for parking recommendations. \n \n \n \n \n \n Accommodations\nApp State is committed to providing an inclusive experience for individuals with disabilities. Bursting with acrobatics\, aerial artistry\, juggling\, and a dose of nostalgia\, this theatrical circus adventure brings the era’s vibrant sights and sounds to life. \nAt the center of the spectacle\, in keeping with Cirque Mechanics customary ingenuity\, stands a marvel of man-powered engineering: a giant Ferris Wheel\, surrounded by incredible machines that reimagine the classic rides and games of the time. \nOur story follows a weary amusement park worker stuck in the grind\, his joy for the park long faded. But when he confiscates a guest’s boom box\, a playful chase ignites — a whirlwind of stunts\, surprises\, and shared laughter. In the end\, the pursuit transforms into a heartfelt moment of connection\, proving that even in the unlikeliest places\, we can find common ground to bring us together. \nNote: A full-length version of this performance takes place at 7:30pm the same evening. \n \n \n \n \n \n Run Time: ~ 60 minutesRecommended for: Grades 4-12Study Guide: download pdf here \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets\nContact theschaefercenter@appstate.edu\, call 828-262-4046\, visit the box office at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts\, or register online.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n $5/person\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register group of 25+ people\n \n Register group of less than 25 people\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Company\n \n \n \n \n \n Cirque Mechanics\, inspired by modern circus\, finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in the stories of American industrial ingenuity. The shows\, imbedded in realism\, display a raw quality rarely found in modern circus. Cirque Mechanics’ signature style is wrapped in acrobatics\, mechanical marvels and a bit of clowning around. This sensibility can be found in the company’s five theatrical productions — “Birdhouse Factory\,” “Boom Town\,” “Pedal Punk\,” “42ft\,” and “Zephyr.” \nThe productions infuse the entertainment world with original apparatus and unique designs that can be found nowhere else. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Educator Workshops\nThe APPlause! SUMMARY:North Carolina Symphony: What Makes Music\, Music?
DESCRIPTION:For more than 75 years\, the North Carolina Symphony’s Education Concerts have inspired generations of students through one of the nation’s most extensive symphony education programs. Designed for students in grades 3-5\, these concerts introduce the instruments of the orchestra while exploring the fundamental elements of music through an interactive and engaging live concert experience. \nThe 2026/27 Education Concert\, What Makes Music\, Music?\, invites students to discover how melody\, rhythm\, tempo\, dynamics\, texture\, and form shape the music they hear. Featuring works by Mozart\, Strauss\, Joplin\, and more\, the program introduces students to a variety of musical styles and demonstrates how composers creatively use the elements of music in each piece.  \nEducators are encouraged to take advantage of the North Carolina Symphony’s free curriculum-aligned teacher resources and transportation funding opportunities to help make this field trip experience accessible and meaningful for every student. \nNote: A special performance featuring Hayes School of Music musicians will take place later the same evening at 7:30pm as part of the Appalachian Arts 2026/2027 series. Each year\, more than 300 concerts\, education programs\, and community engagement offerings reach adults and schoolchildren in all 100 North Carolina counties—in communities large and small\, and in concert halls\, auditoriums\, gymnasiums\, restaurants\, clubs\, and outdoor settings. NCS is proud to expand access to audiences around the globe through concerts and educational offerings available through the digital space. \nThe Symphony performs under the artistic leadership of Grammy Award-winning Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto. NCS’s state headquarters venue is the spectacular Meymandi Concert Hall at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh\, and the Symphony’s service across the state includes series in Chapel Hill\, Wilmington\, New Bern\, and Moore County\, as well as the Summerfest series at its summer home\, the outdoor Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. NCS brings some of the world’s greatest talents to North Carolina and embraces home-state artists from classical musicians to bluegrass bands\, creating live music experiences distinctive to North Carolina. NCS is dedicated to giving voice to new art and has presented more than 50 U.S. or world premieres in its history. \nCommitted to engaging students of all ages across North Carolina\, NCS leads one of the most extensive education programs of any symphony orchestra in the country—serving over 150\,000 students each year. In alignment with the curriculum set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction\, the Symphony provides training and resources for teachers\, sends small ensembles into classrooms\, and presents full-orchestra in-person and online Education Concerts that bring the fundamentals of music to life. Music Discovery for preschoolers combines music with storytelling\, and at the middle and high school levels\, students have opportunities to work directly with NCS artists and perform for NCS audiences. \nThe North Carolina Symphony gratefully acknowledges financial support from Wake County\, the City of Raleigh\, and the State of North Carolina. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Educator Workshops\nThe APPlause!
